About Us

Restore Joplin Volunteers during RecoveryWith the assistance of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) and Missouri SEMA, the Jasper County COAD was established in March, 2005 in response to the 2003 Carl Junction tornado. The mission of the COAD is to enhance the community’s ability to mitigate, prepare, respond and recover from disasters thus ensuring that human needs inherent in a disaster situation are evaluated and addressed.

The COAD has effectively worked to manage volunteers and community recovery needs after ice storms, high wind storms, flooding, and tornadoes. Additionally, the COAD has coordinated educational campaigns to prepare individuals for self-sheltering, mitigating tips for snow and ice storms, and weather preparedness for the Jasper County area. The COAD responds to community and agency needs to prioritize collaboration efforts, provide education, coordinate volunteers, and assist in individual and family recovery. The COAD works to identify gaps in community services and attempts to provide unmet needs to individuals and families.  The Long Term Recovery Committee (LTRC) and the COAD work to leverage funds, donated goods, and member agency resources to assist individuals and families in their disaster recovery.

Membership is open to any organization interested in any phase of emergency management including mitigation, preparation, response, or recovery.  Examples of current partner organizations include: American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, City of Joplin, Crosslines of Joplin, Carthage Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, The Independent Living Center, Salvation Army, Economic Security Corporation, Joplin Area Ministerial Alliance, and many more.

From our experiences, we hope to be a resource for other communities planning for or responding to disasters.

The Jasper County COAD meets at 1:30 p.m. on the first Thursday in March, June, September, and December (quarterly) in the Fifth Floor Conference Room at the Joplin City Hall, 602 South Main Street, Joplin.

The following are organizing documents and materials for the Jasper County COAD and resources from the Missouri and National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster).
